TIME PROVEN EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OF DESIGN & MANUFACTURING
How can I help you?
This is a question I ask at every step of the process. You are not dealing with a faceless company here, instead you are dealing with me directly.
My intention is to help make your product a success. I don’t provide artistic design as this is what you hire an artist for. Yes, I have created designs before from scratch, but the client knew exactly what they wanted the item to look like. Here, we are talking about production engineering, designing for manufacturing, and designing for commercial success. This is what I do best.
So what brings you here?
Are you embarking on your first product, or perhaps you are looking to optimize existing production? Do you have the best manufacturer for your production needs? Can your design meet your market price and be profitable? Are you production ready?
Considering those questions, perhaps I can help… I design, manufacture and sell my own products, so you are about to go through a process very familiar to me.

Why me? – What makes me different to all the other potential designers you may be considering?
All good production outcomes follow a well defined process. My goal is to provide you with just that… a set of procedures, instructions, education and assets, which will allow you to move confidently into manufacturing your own product. You can engage me in different ways.
An agreed set price project for Design Work (post artistic concept), 3D Modelling, Production Drawings, Quality Documents items which have a deliverable at the end of the process.
As a consultant on an per minute rate and contacted for general questions, charged in 1 minute blocks.

My career history can be found in the About page. It outlines my experience in the industry. Here is a summary and answer to the question Why Me?
I consider design from a manufacturing point of view and engineer the best cost outcome.
I have resurrected design ideas that were unprofitable.
I use modern tools that allow me to quickly implement changes into your design as well as simulate aspects of the design which directly impact price.
I have years of practical experience creating prototypes, as well as running production plants.
I have intimate knowledge of most production processes, and those I am not familiar with I can learn very quickly. Having broad manufacturing experience allows me to offer new and unusual approaches to solutions.
My work is organised and well documented. Having a clear revision system and revision control, results in fewer mistakes and misunderstanding by the manufacturer.
When I design I always consider the person who will be making your product. Constantly monitoring manufacturing difficulty of each component.
The Deliverables - What do you get from me when we work on a set price project?
Every project is different and will require various types of documentation and assets to be provided to your manufacturer.
For a typical project I can provide the following.
3D Models – for Rendering (STL file format). This type of file is commonly used by 3D rendering artists to create beautiful life-like, virtual models of your product so you can render your products for promotional and sales purposes. The STL format can also be used to 3D print your product to make a prototype.
3D Model – for Production (STEP file format). This type of file is a very useful file. It is an accurate representation of your product, and can be used to create tooling, such as molds or machine control codes to create your design. Sending this file to the manufacturer will allow them to provide you with very accurate quoting for tooling, as well as production items.
Full Manufacturing Drawings (PDF File format). These manufacturing drawings are usually provided in conjunction with the 3D STEP file. The drawings bring attention to specific manufacturing techniques used to create the product. Special production annotations, assembly instructions and Bill of Materials (BOM) are included, as well as many other production aspects communicated to the manufacturer.
Machine Shop Drawings (DXF file format). This type of file is commonly used along side the PDF file. It contains line drawings that are usually imported into programs that control machinery such as 3 Axis Routers, Later Cutters, Plasma Cutters, etc. They are used to ensure that machine files are accurate.
Basic Renderings (TIFF and JPEG file formats). These files are images generated by 3D software that allows you to see what the product might look like with specific materials applied.
Optional Documentation & Services
- Quality Inspection Procedures (PDF file format). These are instructions for your quality inspection team used to instruct them to check for certain aspects of the product that could cause problems with the customer. This is a perpetual document, and will usually need to be updated every time a new production run occurs.
Factory Inspection Report & Interpretation. If you are manufacturing in China, I can put you in touch with reputable inspection companies who can organize an on-site inspection of your factory. Once your manufacturer has been inspected, you will receive a report outlining their findings. These reports can reveal detailed insights about the manufacturer and their production capabilities. I will take you through the report and explain to you how to interpret it.
Consultation with production facility. This is where I become involved with your supplier and help to communicate your needs. This is especially helpful if you are finding it difficult to communicate with your supplier. And is especially useful when things become more technical and you do not have knowledge in that area.
Production files for nested products (DXF file format). These files are used to send to a 3 Axis Router, Laser Cutter, Plasma Cutter, etc. The file is optimized to create as many possible product items from a single piece of material stock. In this example we have 156 units that we can create out of a sheet of metal.
Consultation for Intellectual Property Protection. I can provide advice on what to do about patents. I have an excellent network of patent attorneys that I can put you in contact with. It is very useful to have the production engineer on hand during patent discussions. I have also gone though the patent process several times and can explain the process to you.
In summary, I can help you get your product made. If you require design services I can certainly recommend good artistic designers, who also have their own successful product lines. If you want to know more about me check out the About page, and see if II can help you with your next project.
